And with the holiday resort of Aviemore and the magnificent Cairngorms within easy reach, it's a firm favourite with all those seeking outdoor excitement.Royal Deeside is scattered with historic castles, some of them ruins, some wonderful examples of the turreted confections so typical of Scotland. There are some lovely towns to discover on Deeside, from Balmoral, favourite summer haunt of the Royal Family, to Ballater, Aboyne and Braemar, scene of the famous highland gathering. One of our Aberdeenshire lodge holidays is also the perfect excuse to discover the granite city of Aberdeen, now the oil capital of Europe.
